Great Northern Beans and Ham in a Dutch Oven

Ingredients

  • 1 Ham Bone
  • 16oz. Great Northern Beans (dried, uncooked)
  • 4 cups Chicken Broth
  • 4 cups Water
  • 1 Tsp. Garlic Powder
  • 1 Tsp. Onion Powder
  • 1 Tsp. Granulated Chicken Powder
  • 1 Medium Sweet Onion (diced)
  • 1 cup Carrots (diced)
  • 1 cup Celery (diced)
  • 2 Bay leaves
  • 1 1/2 cups Cooked Ham (diced)

Instructions

  1. Place dried beans on a baking sheet and remove any rocks, sharp objects, and ½ pieces. Place them in a colander and rinse them, then set them aside.
  2. In a Dutch oven on medium heat, place the ham bone into the pot, then add chicken broth, water, seasonings, onion, carrots, and celery. Stir, then add dried beans and bay leaves. Cover and bring it to a low boil, then let it simmer covered on medium-low, stirring every 20 minutes for about 1 ½ to 2 hours.
  3. Once the beans are cooked, uncover, and remove the ham bone. Then add in the diced ham and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove the bay leaves and serve with some warm cornbread. It’s also delicious served over rice.
