What are Southern Smothered Pork Chops?

Southern Smothered Pork Chops are a classic dish in Southern cuisine. They consist of thick-cut pork chops that are seasoned, seared, and then simmered in a flavorful gravy until tender and delicious. The gravy is typically made with onions, garlic, and various spices, giving the dish a rich and savory flavor. Smothered Pork Chops are often served with traditional Southern sides like mashed potatoes, collard greens, or cornbread.

Can Smothered Pork Chops be made in advance?

Yes, Smothered Pork Chops can be made in advance. After cooking the pork chops and simmering them in the gravy, allow them to cool completely before storing them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, gently reheat the chops and gravy on the stovetop or in the microwave until heated through. Add a splash of broth or water if needed to maintain the desired consistency. It’s important to note that reheating the dish may slightly soften the texture of the pork chops, but the flavors will still be delicious.

How to make Smothered Pork Chops:

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Season both sides of the pork chops with salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.  In a shallow dish, add flour and season with salt and pepper.

3. In a large, deep, oven-safe frying pan or a cast iron skillet on medium heat, add olive oil and 3 tbsp. Butter.  Once the butter has melted, place pork chops in the pan and sear both sides until golden brown (about 5 minutes on each side).  Then, transfer the pork chops to a plate and set aside.
